Energy to Finish Strong

Most K-12 educators are now heading into the last three weeks of the semester, and the scramble to the finish strong is palpable.

Before the calendar and clock begin their yearly chuckle in your face, and as you look at the chapters that won’t get covered, its a good time to take stock. Look back at what you have accomplished. Review the good that your students achieved. Make sure that even if things did not go as planned, it’s OK. As long as we (as lifetime learners) keep talking and keep working something will come of your efforts.

Great educators take reasonable risks with their curriculum and support their students while experimenting with new strategies. Sometimes education is messy. Sometimes your lessons don’t work. Sometimes they fly. Every time you try a new approach your teaching gets better and your students appreciate it. As we move into the mad dash to cover that last chapter or review the first unit please take a moment and ask yourself and your students, “What went right?”

Your first few screencast videos were too long and drawn out? Make them shorter.

You chose an ineffective angle to engage your learners? Choose a new angle next time.

Failures are frustrating and exhausting but a necessary part of the learning process. After all, something must have gone right.

If you’re here reading this, you are wanting to become – or already are – an interactive teacher. Something’s keeping you going. Most likely, it’s the need for your lessons to be meaningful to your students’ education.

At this time of year don’t forget to ask the people who can tell you just how meaningful you are to them, your students. You just have to be courageous enough to ask them. I’m sure what you get back will surprise you and give you the energy needed to make a strong finish. Good luck.
